NSW State Rally

NSW State Rally is run each year in August at Cataract Scout Park by the Branch Commissioner for Scouts. It provides the opportunity for Scouts all over NSW to attend as a Patrol to do some light weight easy hiking between four main activity centres around Cataract Scout Park.

This event is unique in its structure and format, and somewhat different to our own Scout Hike in the following ways:
  • Hiking distances are much less – making State Rally immediately attractive to those new to hiking or not able to cope with extended distances required at Scout Hike
  • The terrain is flat – again making it attractive to those new to hiking and not able to cope with the endurance required in the forest setting at Scout Hike
  • Camping facilities, eg showers, toilets, washing up, etc, are more readily available and up-market to those available in the forest – as you would expect

State Rally also provides the opportunity for our Scouts to experience the activities put on by Leaders outside our own Region, and more importantly, meet and chat with a wider cross section of Scouts from all over NSW.

Each of the main ‘metro’ Regions buddies with country Regions to provide four Regional Activity Centres, or RAC’s. Sydney North Region usually buddies with The Golden West Region.

The objective for the Scouts is to gain as many points as possible from two main sources:
  • Patrol Camping – specifically tentage, menu, hygiene, tidiness and behaviour
  • Activity Bases – specifically PL leadership, planning, attitude, accomplishment
    1. Patrols are encouraged to attend four Activity Bases per RAC, but they can do more
    2. Up to four Activity Bases per RAC will count towards the Patrols score
    3. The Patrol needs to manage their time so that a maximum of two hours are spent per RAC, which equates to 20-25 minutes per Activity Base

At the end of State Rally, various top Patrol awards are made:
  • The three Patrols with the most points are recognised
  • The top three per Region are recognised
  • Special recognition is also made to the top Patrol Leader per Region based on the points awarded for Patrol Leadership

Each RAC is managed by the Regional Commissioner - Scouts, and provides the facilities to manage the Scouts on and off the RAC, monitor the camping activities of the Scouts staying overnight, manage the camping facilities, as well as providing the required Leaders and services to run the RAC and activity bases.
